Lieutenant Michael Maughan

RLA - Teachers

Lieutenant Michael Maughan has been an English teacher in a variety of contexts going back to 1995 and began his first teaching role in Robert Land Academy in 2017. Michael grew up in Alberta, imagining himself either playing guitar in a rock band or playing left wing for the Edmonton Oilers, never planning to move away from the Canadian prairies. However, being a student of literature and language has taught Michael that good plots are hardly ever predictable, and that interesting characters often go through a lot of uncertainty and challenge to become mature. After earning his Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta, Michael took his first teaching position at an international school in Hong Kong where he taught for a decade (and, incidentally, got married and started a family). Though his hockey career never materialized, over the years, Michael has been able to maintain his love of music and has enjoyed the opportunity of working with student musicians from all over the world, including right here at RLA. Currently, Michael is enjoying the privilege of teaching English 9, 10, and 11 in addition to being a B-Coy Section leader and Music Club coach.
